Blood Test Levels for Diagnosis of DM and Prediabetes
The following shows blood test levels of a normal person, someone with Prediabetes and someone with Diabetes Mellitus.
HbA1c is a blood test done to assess the level of glucose over the last 3 months.
BS is blood sugar levels
Normal
HbA1c = 5.6 or lower
Fasting BS of 99 or lower
2 Hour pp BS of 139 or lower
Prediabetes
HbA1c = 5.7 to 6.4999
Fasting BS of 100 to 125
2 hour pp BS of 140 to 199
Diabetes Mellitus
HbA1c = 6.5 or higher
Fasting BS of 126 or higher
Any pp BS of 200 or higher
What can we do to reverse Prediabetes?
- Weight Loss – losing 5% to 7% can reverse prediabetes in many cases
- Exercise – 30 minutes of excercise 4 to 5 days a week
- Cutting Fat and Calorie Intake –
- Metformin – espeically in those patients with HbA1c’s of 6.0 or higher
Metaformin enhances glucose uptake and utilization, decreaeses hepatic glucose production and decreases intestinal absorption of glucose.
The endpoint of these efforts is to prevent or delay the onset of Type II Diabetes Mellitus.
